Units & Divisions
Detective Division

Detectives assist officers with complex, on-going, or large-scale investigations by conducting thorough investigations into their crimes/incidents. They are responsible for any necessary follow-ups that may be required and oversee evidence maintenance and transport. In specific cases where charges are applicable, detectives work closely with the Jefferson County Prosecutor's Office and the Internet Crimes Against Children.
Emergency Response Team

The Emergency Response Team (ERT) is called into action in scenarios including riotous activities, hostage situations, barricaded subjects, high-risk warrant executions, and apprehensions of dangerous felons. As a specially trained unit, their paramount objective is the safeguarding of lives and property. Composed of Madison and County officers operating under the supervision of the team commander, the ERT responds to any incident requiring the use of specialized weapons, equipment, and tactics.
Field Training Division

The Field Training Division is composed of officers with a minimum of 5 years’ experience who have shown a dedication to working with and developing our rookie officers. The Field Training program consists of 12-16 weeks of post-academy, hands-on training in a variety of topics. These seasoned officers serve as mentors, providing guidance and support to new recruits, and conducts regular assessments to ensure that trainees are meeting the department's standards and are equipped with the necessary skills to excel in their roles. The program fosters a culture of continuous learning and professional growth within our law enforcement community.
Training Officers:

Must have completed 3 years as a law enforcement officer and complete a 40-hour Instructor Development Course through the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA). Officers must then go through another 40 hour, ILEA certified course for their specialized field (Emergency Vehicle Operations, Firearms, Defensive Tactics, De-escalation). These officers are vital to the department's success by providing state-mandated training.
K-9 Unit

The K-9 unit currently consists of three handlers and dogs: two trained in narcotics detection, one trained to detect explosives. These highly trained canine teams help ensure public safety by detecting illegal substances and explosives in diverse environments. The K-9 unit's expertise and dedication enhance our department's ability to respond to threats and protect our communities with precision and efficiency.
Bicycle Team/ Mobile Event Team

The Mobile Events Team (MET) is composed of bicyclists and golf cart operators deployed during festivals, community events, and routine patrols. The MET effectively navigates through crowded spaces, ensuring the safety and security of event attendees and the surrounding community. Their presence not only deters potential disturbances but also facilitates rapid response in case of emergencies, enhancing the overall experience for residents and visitors alike. Proactive policing and fostering community engagement, MET upholds public safety standards.
Traffic Division

The Traffic Division enforces the traffic laws and statutes of Indiana and the City of Madison. These officers undergo training in accident investigation techniques, speed enforcement, and DUI detection to effectively address traffic-related concerns in the community. With a focus on collaboration and innovation, the Traffic Division continuously seeks new strategies to address evolving traffic challenges and ensure the smooth flow of vehicles throughout our city.
Animal Control

The Animal Control Officer coordinates with the Jefferson County Animal Shelter and the Jefferson County Animal Control Officer and local veterinarians to capture and impound dangerous or stray animals, investigate cases of animal cruelty, and enforce state and local laws. By proactively addressing animal welfare issues, Animal Control seeks to maintain a compassionate and humane environment for both animals and residents alike.
