The City of Madison Welcomes New Parks and Recreation Director

Madison, Indiana (April 4, 2023) – The City of Madison announced today Scott Klein has been named the director of parks and recreation. Klein, who began his role with the city Monday, April 3, 2023, brings a wide array of leadership skills to the parks.

Klein previously served as director of facilities and grounds for the Penland School of Crafts, where he was responsible for the execution, overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the school’s 60 structures and 415 acres. He also worked to develop and implement short and long-term budgets for maintenance and capital improvements. Klein then served as the director of operations at Hanover College, where he had broad oversight over campus operations, including building and grounds, housekeeping, maintenance, event management, fleet management, and athletic event support. Most recently, Klein served as a project manager, where he obtained bids and approved contracts with architects, sub-contractors and structural, mechanical and civil engineers in addition to temporary laborers for new construction and renovation projects.

“I am pleased to welcome Scott to our team. Scott has the facilities management and budgetary expertise we need to lead our major initiatives, such as expanded programming, capital investments, and operational improvements. Recreation for all ages and abilities is so important to the quality of life in Madison, it is imperative that we make strategic investments to enhance our system, and I believe Scott will be an asset to our city,” said Madison’s Mayor Bob Courtney.

As director of parks and recreation, Klein will work closely with the mayor, parks board, golf board, community leaders and the parks department team to promote the quality-of-life initiatives happening throughout the parks. He will work to establish priorities, execute the five-year plan, and offer new programming to the families and individuals in our community.

“I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to serve as the next director of parks and recreation for the City of Madison. I’m excited to lead the department into its next generation, providing new and exciting sports and recreation programs for all residents while updating and improving our existing programs and dynamic parks. I appreciate the mayor’s confidence in me for this role, and I look forward to working with the mayor, Parks Board, Golf Course Board, and the citizens of Madison as we grow.” said Klein.
