"The Human Relations Commission, the Office of the Mayor of the City of Madison, the Madison City Council, the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners, and Hanover College affirm the inherent worth, dignity, and equality of all people and declare any message of hate or discrimination to be counter to the values of our diverse and inclusive community." - Joint statement, approved 2018.

The purpose of the Human Relations Commission is to hear complaints of discrimination in the City, not including complaints from the work force. The commission also promotes diversity and civility.
