The Plan Commission office administers the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Historic District Board of Review, and the Plan Commission. It issues building permits, peforms building inspections, enforces land use ordinances, enforces zoning regulations and nuisance ordinances.
The City of Madison is proud of its managed growth through planning and zoning. The adoption of an ordinance protecting the City's historic district has enabled us to be named a National Landmark Historic District, one of only 11 in the United States, and arguably one of the largest. The rules which govern the planning and zoning of the community have been updated to mesh more closely with those of Jefferson County and the town of Hanover, which were revised recently. This is a list of contractors who have been registered in the City of Madison to do work. This list does *not* indicate whether their registration is current. For that information, or with any other questions, please contact the Plan Commission Office at 812-265-8324. Before having work done, the property owner also should check with the contractor to verify current Certificate of Liability insurance.
