Examine the life of Major Samuel Woodfill, the only Congressional Medal of Honor recipient from Indiana in World War I, from his early childhood in Bryantsburg, Indiana to his death in Vevay, Indiana. The presentation will focus on Woodfill’s military service, and include his family, wife, and personal traits. Dr. Robert Woodfill, the great-great-nephew of Sam, graduated from Vevay High School and received a Ph.D. from Purdue University. Retired and living in Vevay, Bob writes for several periodicals. Over the last 20 years he has researched and written biographical works on Major Woodfill. With access to new, and previously unreported works, Bob has given the Jefferson County Historical Center many new Sam Woodfill artifacts to be displayed for the Indiana Centennial Commission-sponsored “Samuel Woodfill Day” on October 12, 1918, the 100th anniversary of when Sam Woodfill earned his Medal of Honor at Cunel, France in World War I.
