Pickup days for recycling are:
- Downtown (East of West Street): Every Monday
- Downtown (West of West Street): Every Thursday
- Hilltop West of Cragmont Street: Every Tuesday
- Hilltop East of Cragmont Street: Every Wednesday
These dates will be consistent unless a week has a holiday, then your scheduled pickup may be delayed one day.

Items accepted for recycling are:
- Plastic bottles and jugs
- Aluminum and metal cans - must be clean and remove any labels
- Glass bottles and jars
- Paper and cardboard, includes junk mail, magazines, phone books, & paperboard.
- Cartons (e.g. milk and juice cartons)
The City of Madison has partnered with Rumpke for Recycling Services. To learn more about Rumpke, which items they accept (and why), as well as learn more about the process, please visit their YouTube page.
Items not accepted curbside include: plastic bags, plastic foam products, shoes, rags, clothing, medical sharps and syringes, window and drinking glass, coat hangers or scrap metal, hard back book, plastic that are not bottles or jugs, and electronics. Plastic bags can be recycled at Kroger on Madison's hilltop. Electronics, oils, refrigerated items, used tires, and batteries are accepted at the Southeastern Indiana Recycling District in Jefferson Proving Ground.
ALL items can be placed in one container labeled for recycling. Please DO NOT sort items into plastic bags. Only clear plastic bags of shredded paper is accepted. Garbage cans or bins are allowed to be used as long as it is labeled recycling only. Free labels are available at City Hall. Bins and/or cans must be at curbside by 7 a.m.
